When a business is starting a new website or updating an existing website with WordPress, one of the first decisions they are going to need to make is if they want a “template” or “custom” designed WordPress website. How will you know which is right for your business? What is the difference? What are the pros and cons?
We will break down the differences between a template and custom-designed WordPress website to help you make the right choice for your business.
What is a Template WordPress Website?
WordPress is an amazing tool to build your website quickly and easily. Hundreds of thousands of people and businesses use it everyday. Part of the reason it is so popular is that it is so easy to use, and there are countless pre-built templates available. A pre-built template comes with all the colors, fonts and layout in place. You just fill in the information for your business. Replace the template images with yours, update the copy and you are good to go! It sounds so simple, right? And it is! Maybe this is the route for your business. But what about the other option of a custom designed site?
Pros of a Template WordPress Site:
- Budget friendly:
For those businesses on a tight budget, a Template theme might be where you start. They range from free to $100 or more.
- Can launch quickly:
Template themes are usually simple to fill in with your information, and already have a layout and format set so the user does not have to think about “Design”.
- Can be easy to use:
A Template site is usually very user-friendly due to the limited amount of areas available to change.
Cons of a WordPress Template Website:
- Little choice of colors, fonts, layout:
If you are particular about colors used, fonts and layout, a Template is not the route for your business. Templates are usually set-in-stone with no changes (this is what makes them easy to use though!)
- Limited tech support:
This could be one of the biggest drawbacks to a Template theme. They do not normally have a lot of support included. Or there is some support, but it is not very quick. A more premium version of a theme will have better support for issues. There could also be security risks with “Free” or lower costs themes, so it is important to ensure the template you buy is from a reputable company.
- Limited custom-programming:
Your site won’t have a lot of custom-capabilities. You will want to research what comes packaged in your template to ensure it has the configurations you need before purchasing. Adding custom-programming down the road will cost you money. Always try to find sites that are using the Template you are interested in to see if it will work for your business.
What is a Custom Designed WordPress Website?
A custom design is exactly what you may expect: a website built to your specifications and unique to your business. You usually work with an agency or professional to build your website from ground zero. There is nothing to constrain what you may want to do.
Pros of a Custom Designed WordPress Website:
Cons of a Custom Designed WordPress Website:
- Can be more expensive:
Cost is always front-of-mind for any business, especially if you are just starting out. So it is important to consider. Although a custom-design site will be more costly, you may also wind up with a more professional, original, well-branded and search engine friendly website than if you went with the less-expensive route.
- Could be more time-consuming, but not always…
Because a custom-site is starting from the ground up, it makes sense it “may” take more time. But that is not always the case. If you are using a reputable agency to build your site, they will have experience and can probably build a site quicker custom than somebody with no experience trying to even use a Template!
- Dependent on skills of designer and developer:
If the agency you are working with does not have the skills in design and development you need, it is going to cost you. Research agencies that specialize in your business, and see what sort of history and track record they have! If they have years of experience in your industry, they will be able to help you quicker than someone who has never worked in your area.
Which WordPress Website Design Option is Right for Your Business?
Now that you understand the difference between the two types of designs, you’ll need to decide which is the right one for your business.
Not quite ready?
If you are not quite ready to to invest in the future and only want to dip your toe into a web presence, then maybe go with a lower-cost pre-built design.
